OWERRI – Rev. Fr. Marcel Ubaechu, a priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, was kidnapped by armed men on Sunday in Imo State, sparking outrage and calls for urgent action.
According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen ambushed Fr. Ubaechu along Okigwe Road while he was returning from a pastoral assignment. The assailants, heavily armed and in an unmarked vehicle, forced him out of his car and drove him to an unknown location.
The Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri confirmed the incident in a statement, describing it as "a distressing attack on a man of God" and appealing for his immediate release.
Police Response
Imo State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, said security agencies have launched a manhunt for the kidnappers.
"We are working with other security units to track the perpetrators and ensure the priest is rescued unharmed," Okoye stated.
Rising Insecurity in Southeast Nigeria
This incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity in the Southeast, where kidnappings for ransom have surged. Just last week, gunmen abducted a Methodist bishop in Abia State before he was later released.
Religious and community leaders have called on the government to intensify security measures, particularly along vulnerable highways.
Appeal for Release
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and local faithful have begun prayer vigils for Fr. Ubaechu’s safe return.
"We urge the kidnappers to release him unconditionally. Violence against clergy harms the moral fabric of society," said Archbishop Lucius Ugorji of Owerri.
Authorities are urging anyone with useful information to contact the police immediately.
