Prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has sharply criticized President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly, asserting that if the legislature were truly independent, impeachment proceedings against the President would have already begun. Yesufu’s comments come amid widespread concerns over constitutional breaches and the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which she and other activists describe as illegal and undemocratic.
Speaking in March 2025, Yesufu condemned the National Assembly’s endorsement of the emergency rule through a voice vote, highlighting the lack of transparency and proper constitutional process. She warned that allowing such actions to go unchallenged sets a dangerous precedent that undermines Nigeria’s democracy and the rule of law.
“Yesufu emphasized that the Constitution is sacrosanct and must be followed strictly to safeguard the democracy many Nigerians have fought and died for,” according to statements made at a press conference in Abuja. She urged Nigerians not to be complacent, stressing that failure to hold leaders accountable will perpetuate self-serving governance by elected officials.
Her critique extends to both President Tinubu and the legislature, which she accuses of failing in their constitutional duties to protect democratic principles and serve the people’s interests.
The activist’s remarks have resonated with civil society groups demanding the reversal of the state of emergency in Rivers State and the reinstatement of elected officials, while promising legal challenges against what they call unconstitutional actions by the federal government.
