Amnesty International Calls for Probe into Police Assaults on Protesters Demanding Cybercrime Act Repeal

Amnesty International has condemned attacks on protesters and journalists in Abuja, Yobe, and Port Harcourt, calling for a thorough investigation into the incidents. This comes as youths across Nigeria, under the #TakeItBack movement, staged rallies to protest the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act, worsening economic conditions, and the state of emergency in Rivers State.

Protests Across the Nation

Despite police warnings, protesters took to the streets in several states, including Abuja, Rivers, Yobe, Lagos, Osun, and Oyo. In Abuja and Port Harcourt, police dispersed demonstrators with tear gas, and some protesters and journalists were reportedly beaten. In Yobe, security agents arrested the coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, Abubakar Jawa, along with four others. Lagos police prevented protesters from accessing the State House of Assembly.

Demands of the Protesters

The protesters, wearing orange berets and carrying placards with messages such as "Stop the repression" and "Let us breathe," demanded the repeal of the Cybercrime Act, which they say is being used to stifle freedom of speech. They also voiced concerns about rising inflation, insecurity, and the political situation in Rivers State.

Arrests and Seizures

Rex Elanu, Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement in FCT Abuja, demanded the immediate release of arrested members and called for a review of the Cybercrime Act. He stated that police officers seized personal belongings, including protest materials.

Government Response

The Federal Government has affirmed citizens' right to protest but warned against the destruction of national infrastructure. Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, stated that while the government acknowledges the validity of the issues raised by protesters, demonstrations must remain peaceful.

Future Actions

The protesters have threatened to embark on another round of protests in August if their demands are not met. The situation remains tense as civil society organizations continue to call for accountability and respect for fundamental human rights.
