FG Shuts Enugu Airport for Emergency Runway Repairs, Flights Diverted to Nearby Airports

The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, from April 22 to May 6, 2025, to carry out urgent repairs on a damaged section of the runway. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) disclosed that a sudden and significant rupture was detected on the asphalt surface at a critical part of the runway, necessitating immediate rehabilitation to ensure passenger safety.

FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs, Obiageli Orah, explained that the runway will be closed for landings and takeoffs during the repair period in compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations. She appealed to all airport users and stakeholders for patience and cooperation, apologizing for the late notice.

In response to the closure, airlines including Air Peace and Ibom Air have suspended flights to Enugu, diverting operations to nearby airports such as Asaba and Anambra. Air Peace cited ongoing safety concerns due to the deteriorating runway condition as the reason for halting flights.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo expressed dissatisfaction with the quality of previous runway repairs, noting that waterlogging issues were not properly addressed during the 2019 rehabilitation, leading to recurring cracks and potholes that pose serious risks to travelers. He assured that the government is committed to completing the emergency repairs within the scheduled timeframe to minimize disruption.

Passengers are advised to plan accordingly and explore alternative routes during the closure period as efforts continue to modernize and maintain the airport’s infrastructure for safer operations.
