Pope Francis Dies at 88 from Stroke; Vatican Announces Start of Sede Vacante Period

Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff and a transformative figure in the Catholic Church, passed away on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at 7:35 a.m. local time in his Vatican residence, Casa Santa Marta. The Vatican confirmed that the cause of death was a stroke, compounded by cardiovascular collapse, following a period of declining health that included pneumonia and chronic respiratory issues.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Holy See, officially announced the pope’s death, describing Francis as a devoted servant of the Lord and a champion for the marginalized. Farrell also presided over the traditional rite of the ascertainment of death and the ceremonial placing of the pope’s body in a coffin on Monday evening.

Pope Francis led the Roman Catholic Church for 12 years, guiding it through significant reforms and emphasizing inclusion, care for the poor, environmental stewardship, and accountability in the face of clerical abuse scandals. He was widely regarded as a voice for the marginalized and a bridge-builder among faiths and nations.

Following the pope’s death, the Vatican has entered the sede vacante period, during which the College of Cardinals will convene starting April 22 to plan the funeral and prepare for the conclave to elect a new pope. The pope’s mortal remains are expected to be transferred to St. Peter’s Basilica on April 23 for public veneration.

Pope Francis’ passing marks the end of an era for the Catholic Church, as the world mourns a leader who sought to renew the Church’s mission with humility and compassion. The conclave to choose his successor will shape the future direction of the global Catholic community.
