Shettima Declines to Receive Tinubu at Airport Amid Rising Political Tensions

Reports have emerged that Vice President Kashim Shettima declined to receive President Bola Tinubu at the airport during the latter’s recent return to Nigeria. The development has sparked widespread speculation about the state of their working relationship, although official sources have not confirmed the reasons behind the alleged snub.

The Incident and Reactions

A tweet from a grassroots political account claimed that Shettima refused to welcome Tinubu at the airport on April 21, 2025, raising questions about possible friction within the presidency. The claim has not been officially verified but comes amid ongoing rumors of tension between the president and his deputy.

Presidency Denies Rift, Labels Claims as Fabrications

The Presidency has repeatedly dismissed reports suggesting any discord between Tinubu and Shettima. A statement from Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communications, described such rumors as “totally fabricated” and “mischievous,” aimed at sowing discord within the government.

Nkwocha emphasized the strong bond and goodwill between the president and vice president, assuring the public that Shettima remains focused on his constitutional duties without distractions from baseless media stories.

Political observers note that the Tinubu-Shettima administration has faced criticism over perceived marginalization of the vice president. Some analysts argue that Shettima has been sidelined in key decision-making processes, fueling speculation about a power struggle.

Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara has also criticized the executive for simultaneous foreign trips by both Tinubu and Shettima, describing it as “leaving the country headless” and a “serious dereliction of duty,” further highlighting governance concerns.

While the alleged airport incident remains unconfirmed by official sources, the ongoing narratives reflect a tense political atmosphere within Nigeria’s ruling elite. The Presidency continues to urge Nigerians and media outlets to verify information before spreading unsubstantiated claims.

As the 2027 elections approach, the dynamics between President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima will be closely watched, given their potential impact on national politics and governance.
