Former Minister of Defence, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma (retd.), has once again urged Nigerians to take personal responsibility for their safety by defending themselves amid the country’s worsening insecurity. Speaking at a public event in Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, Danjuma emphasized that the government alone cannot guarantee the protection of citizens against kidnappings, killings, and banditry.
Danjuma recalled that he issued a similar warning several years ago, and recent violent incidents in states like Benue, Plateau, and Taraba have only reinforced his concerns. “The warning I gave some years ago is still as valid today as it was then. Nigerians must rise and defend themselves,” he said. He stressed that without proactive self-defense, bandits, terrorists, and criminal gangs will continue to terrorize communities unchecked.
Highlighting the sophistication of the armed groups, Danjuma urged communities to be prepared and even to acquire arms if necessary, noting, “The killers have obtained sophisticated arms… you people should also seek to get it wherever they got the arms. You must defend yourselves against the killers.” He called on Nigerians to protect their families, lands, and lives before criminals completely overrun the country.
The elder statesman’s message comes amid a surge in violent attacks and kidnappings across Nigeria, with many communities feeling abandoned by security agencies. Danjuma’s call for self-defense reflects a growing sentiment that citizens must take collective action to safeguard themselves as government efforts fall short.
In addition to his security appeal, Danjuma expressed appreciation for his staff and partners, particularly praising the TY Danjuma Medical Centre for its dedication despite challenging circumstances.
Danjuma’s renewed call has sparked widespread discussion about the role of citizen self-defense in Nigeria’s security crisis, underscoring the urgency of addressing the nation’s escalating violence through both government and community efforts.
