The Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), Lagos State Chapter, has announced a 24-hour strike scheduled for May 1, 2025, to protest against what it describes as anti-labour practices by ride-hailing companies including Uber, Bolt, and inDrive.
In a statement released on Tuesday, AUATON’s Public Relations Officer, Steven Iwindoye, said members will stay off their apps and refuse to work throughout the May Day protest. The union is demanding respect for workers’ rights and an end to exploitative policies.
Reasons Behind the Strike
AUATON cited several grievances fueling the planned strike, including:
- Poor wages and unfair compensation
- Unjustified deactivations of drivers from platforms
- Insecurity and unsafe working conditions
- Excessive commissions charged by app companies
- Lack of proper rider profiles and verification
- Mandatory facial recognition systems perceived as invasive
- Harmful and exploitative work policies
Iwindoye accused app-based companies like Uber, Bolt, Lagride, inDrive, and Rida of ignoring the union’s repeated calls for dialogue and prioritizing profits over drivers’ welfare.
Union’s Call for Economic Pressure
“We have tried dialogue, and it has not worked; these companies only understand one language: the language of economic pressure,” Iwindoye said. “By shutting down our services, we are sending a clear message that we will not be ignored or disrespected.”
Following the shutdown, AUATON plans to present clear demands and a structured negotiation plan. The union also intends to collaborate with media, labour organizations, and other stakeholders to amplify their message and garner broader support.
Iwindoye appealed for a global unified response to the challenges faced by app-based transporters, emphasizing that drivers are not isolated individuals but a united force demanding fairness and respect.
“This is a global call to action, and we need your support. Let us stand together and demand the respect and fairness we deserve,” he urged.
