Niger State Governor Orders Arrest and Haircut of Anyone Found Wearing Dreadlocks

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has issued a strict directive to security agencies to arrest anyone found wearing dreadlocks in the state. According to the governor, such individuals should be detained, have their hair cut off, and be fined.

The order, which took effect immediately on April 22, 2025, aims to enforce a ban on dreadlocks within Niger State. Governor Bago emphasized that the measure is part of efforts to maintain public order and discourage what he perceives as negative influences associated with the hairstyle.

The directive has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some supporting the move as a way to curb criminality, while others criticize it as discriminatory and an infringement on personal freedom.

Dreadlocks in Nigeria have long been stigmatized due to associations with gangs and criminal elements, although many also view the hairstyle as a cultural or spiritual expression. This new policy in Niger State adds to similar restrictions seen in some Nigerian institutions and communities.

Security agencies in Niger State have been instructed to enforce the ban rigorously, with immediate effect, including arresting offenders, cutting their dreadlocks, and imposing fines.
