NDLEA Pushes for Mandatory Drug Testing of NYSC Members to Curb Drug Abuse

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has called for mandatory drug testing of all members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as they report to orientation camps nationwide. This move is part of the agency’s broader War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative aimed at tackling the rising drug abuse problem among Nigerian youths.

NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.) emphasized that introducing drug tests at the start of the NYSC service year will serve as a deterrent, encouraging corps members to abstain from drugs. He highlighted that early detection will enable timely intervention and support for those who test positive, helping reduce the demand for illicit substances.

Marwa also pointed out the critical shortage of rehabilitation and counseling centers in Nigeria, proposing that NYSC members could be trained to serve as grassroots counselors in primary healthcare centers, thereby extending support to vulnerable communities.

The NDLEA's push aligns with its ongoing WADA campaign, which combines enforcement, education, and community engagement to combat drug trafficking and abuse. Since its launch in 2021, WADA has achieved significant successes, including thousands of arrests and convictions, large drug seizures, and extensive awareness programs targeting schools and communities across Nigeria.

The Director-General of NYSC, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Fadah, recently visited the NDLEA headquarters to commend the agency’s efforts and discuss collaboration as orientation camps prepare to admit new corps members.

This initiative reflects a strategic partnership aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s youth from the dangers of drug abuse and fostering a healthier, drug-free generation.
